THE INSURANCE AGENT |
Well, in brief, common terms, it means that a person goes to another person called an insurance agent, plunks down a substantial amount of money (paid to an insurance company). The basic theory is that he or she (the insured) will die “before their time”, or at least earlier than they would like if they had the choice to pick the time. Then, the insurance company will have to pay out a substantially larger amount of money than the person has paid in, and have that money paid to a person other than the person that died. In effect, you are betting that you will die early and the insurance company is betting that you will live a long healthy life and continue to pay premiums. Seems funny that the insurance company has more faith in your life than you do, doesn’t it? But, then again, they have the statistics that show that the odds are in their favor. How does the insurance company make money on the deal? They get money from a lot of people up front and hopefully have that money to work with and invest, etc. for a long time before they have to pay it back out. What do you get? The peace of mind of knowing that, “if” you die early, your family or whomever the beneficiary is, will have money to support them now that you aren’t around anymore. As long as both sides feel it’s a good agreement and they are satisfied with it, the purpose has been served. What does this have to do with God? Imagine, if you will, the following scenario: You again, are the person looking for insurance. However, this time, the beneficiary is not just someone else but it is you, yourself. In this example, God is the insurance company. However, he doesn’t guarantee money to a beneficiary upon physical death; He guarantees something much, much better. He guarantees eternal life in Heaven with Him. And, as proof of his guarantee to you, He even allows His one and only Son to be humiliated, beaten and then nailed in a very cruel and inhuman way to a tree-of-sorts, and has 2 common criminals put up, likewise, on either side of His Son. All of this, He allows to happen, to prove to you, beyond a shadow of a doubt that He will live up to His part of the agreement of the insurance policy. Now, when buying most any insurance, you go to an insurance agent who acts as the “go-between” for you and the insurance company. This agent explains the policy, what the benefits are and also the limitations. He explains the things you can and can’t do according to the policy. The insurance agent will explain what it will cost you for this policy and what you, or to be more accurate, your beneficiary will receive when you die and the policy is paid off. In my scenario, Jesus is the insurance agent. He is the only way you can get to deal with God. (the insurance company) Jesus instructs you in the ways you need to live and act if you want to collect on the benefits of the insurance (or maybe, “assurance” is a better word) of God. What is the cost for this insurance? You have to take the time to believe in Jesus and what He did for mankind here on earth and you have to ask God for forgiveness of your wrong-doings no matter what they are. And then, you need to change you way of living and begin to learn more about God and Jesus. What does this mean in “dollars and cents” (or maybe “sense”)? First, there are no dollars because it doesn’t cost any money……and time-wise, probably as little as 2 to 5 minutes of your time. In fact, probably in as little time as it takes to go to the refrigerator during a TV commercial, you can insure your eternal life with God. What does it mean, “sense-wise”? If you consider yourself wise and having the “sense” enough to look out for your future well-being and that of your beneficiaries, and “sense” enough that you will pay money for a life insurance policy while you are physically living on this earth……why wouldn’t you have the “sense” to insure your spirit and soul for an eternity with God in Heaven…….? How are you and others the beneficiaries of your insurance (assurance) policy with God? First, once you change your life according to Jesus, you become a better person and as time goes on, you acquire the attributes of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. As you spend more time with Jesus you become more like Him and when you display these attributes, others around you benefit because of you. Also, you and your loved ones have the assurance that your spirit and soul will continue on in Heaven with God for eternity. Seems to me that you can’t expect any more out of a life insurance policy than that. |
